STEER Your Thinking framework

...What is it?

The STEER Your Thinking framework is a tool that I use in my coaching work.  I developed this tool as a way to help clients examine current thoughts and to create more empowering ones.  It recognizes and leverages the following realization:

Situations can trigger

  Thoughts which cause

    Emotions which drive us to

      Execute behaviors which lead to

        Results we get in our lives

 

 S=Situation.  This refers to what is happening...the facts without any opinion or meaning attached.  "Situation" refers to something that is not under your control.

​

 T=Thought/s.  You will have many thoughts. Pick one or a few similar ones that you want to examine during a coaching session. This is where you're making meaning out of the Situation.  The Situation is just a fact; it has no meaning until you think a thought about it.  We have control over our thoughts.

 E=Emotion/s.  What are the emotions this thought gives you?  We are in control of our emotions - sometimes it doesn’t feel like it but we are because they are created directly by our thoughts.

 E=Execution. These are the behaviors and actions that we execute in response to our emotions.  What do you Do or Not Do when you feel this way?  How do you treat others?  How do you treat yourself?  We are in control of the actions we take. 

​

 R=Results:  The result will often confirm the thought you are thinking. Your brain tends to seek and find evidence that your thought is true, no matter if the thought is helpful or unhelpful for you.

​

When you understand this framework and learn how to take control, you’re learning how to steer your brain away from anxious or self-defeating thoughts and towards positive and empowering thoughts and results.
